VASP was created in 1975 to distribute the Expresso, with part of its share capital having been acquired by Sojornal in 1981. VASP currently distributes the publications of the Group and dozens of others.
In 1989, a joint-venture was established with the Brazilian group Abril which gave rise to the birth of the first business magazine in Portugal – Exame – and marked the entry of the Group into the magazine area.
In March 1991, the share capital of Controljornal was opened to external investors, creating a “super” holding – IMPRESA – which competed for the first private television license, transforming it into one of the founding shareholders of SIC – Sociedade Independente de Comunicação.
SIC broadcasts began in October 1992, making it the first private television channel in Portugal. Its quality, image and independence enabled the station to establish a special relationship with Portuguese television audiences, with SIC gaining leadership of these audiences in 1995, after only three years of broadcasting.
A new cycle of SIC expansion started in 2001, with the development of new areas of activity. This expansion cycle enabled SIC, in addition to its main channel, to include various thematic channels – SIC Notícias (substituting the existing CNL, 60% held by SIC at launch) and SIC Radical, and interests covering multimedia, merchandising and technical services (GMTS). On the world wide web, SIC Online is launched.
In 2003, the magazine area was transformed into Edimpresa, with IMPRESA holding 50% of its capital, together with the Swiss of Edipress, which owns the other 50%. In mid-2008, IMPRESA acquired the entire capital of Edimpresa. This was followed by the merger of the magazine and newspaper activities, under the sub-holding IMPRESA Publishing. In 2003, was born another thematic channel - SIC Mulher, on March 8th. They are also created SIC Indoor and SIC Esperança.
At the end of 2005, IMPRESA acquired the minority position in SIC, increasing its holding to 100% of SIC's capital. At the beginning of 2009, SIC bought the entire capital of the company that owned the SIC Notícias channel.
During the 1st quarter of 2007, IMPRESA created a new business area, under the name of IMPRESA Digital, to bring together a portfolio of holdings in various companies with activities related to the Internet and new technologies, which have become key assets in the strategy for the digital production and distribution of contents for multiple platforms, as a means of fostering the development of the IMPRESA Group brands in the digital world.
At the end of 2008, the outbreak of the economic crisis in Portugal, which worsened over the next few years, forced the IMPRESA to revise its strategy, focusing exclusively on its core activities, and to reduce its portfolio of publications and companies. With this measures, it was possible to cut operating costs by tens of millions of euros, and at the same time reduce its interest-earning liabilities. IMPRESA Publishing become the largest Portuguese editor of publications, with a portfolio of over 30 publications, where are included Expresso, Visão, Caras, Activa, Exame amongst others.
In 2010, SIC began to produce Portuguese soap operas in partnership with SP Televisão and TV Globo. The first soap opera, "Laços de Sangue", was a huge audiences success, enabling SIC to recover its leadership in the main commercial targets during prime time. It was the start of various successful productions that has continued until today, such as “Sol de Inverno”, “Mar Salgado” and in 2015, “Coração de Ouro”. In 2011, the soap opera "Laços de Sangue" was awarded an Emmy, in the category of soap operas, which opened up the international markets to the SIC soap operas in the following years.
In 2011, within the context of a restructuring of the Group, the digital area was reduced to InfoPortugal – Desenvolvimento e Produção de Conteúdos Georreferenciados, Olhares, which owns the largest photography portal in Portuguese, and DGSM. Subsequently, in 2012, DGSM was sold to Nonius Software, in exchange for a 15.06% stake, which provides HSIA and hospitality services to the hotel industry. Nonius Software's stake was sold in 2015.
In 2014, within the scope of its digital expansion, the EXPRESSO launched the EXPRESSO Diário, a daily newspaper only available online to subscribers and buyers of the weekly paper edition. It quickly became a success story. In less than two years, the number of digital clients of the EXPRESSO exceeded 17 thousand, which represents about 20% of its total circulation. At the end of 2014, SIC launched its first channel specifically dedicated to the African Portuguese-speaking markets - DSTV Kids, on an exclusive basis for the DSTV platform.
In 2015, SIC was present in 14 countries, through 53 operators with 7 channels, covering more than 6 million viewers.
