GROUP PRESENTATION

About Us

In 1972, Francisco Pinto Balsemão creates Sojornal, believing that, despite censorship and a whole number of difficulties, it is possible to make a quality weekly.

On January 6th, 1973, the first edition of the EXPRESSO newspaper is published, becoming a reference of Portuguese society and being the seed for the media group that is Impresa today.

In 1975 VASP is founded to distribute EXPRESSO, and part of its share capital is acquired by Sojornal in 1981. Currently, VASP distributes the weekly, together with dozens of other publications.

Controljornal is formed in April of 1988 to be the holding company of all the media group leaded by Francisco Pinto Balsemão, assembling the several holdings possessed by the group.

In 1989 a “joint-venture” is formed with the Brazilian group Abril, originating the birth of the first business magazine in Portugal – “Exame” –, marking the group's entrance in the magazine field.

In March of 1991, Controljornal's share capital is open to external investors, creating a “super” holding – IMPRESA – that applies to the granting of the first private television channels, becoming one of the founding shareholders of SIC – Sociedade Independente de Comunicação.

In October of 1992 SIC's broadcasting begins, the first private television channel in Portugal. Its quality, its image and its independence allow the network to have a privileged with Portuguese viewers, and SIC becomes the rating leader in 1995, after only three years of broadcasting.

SIC Internacional initiates its broadcasting in September, with the ambitious goal of reaching the vast Portuguese community scattered around the world, and also all official Portuguese speaking countries.

On the second half of the year, IMPRESA obtains the control of 51% of SIC's capital and 37,3% of its economic interest, opening its capital to new investors.

At the beginning of April, IMPRESA raises its economic interest in SIC to 51%. In June, Impresa is admitted to the Lisbon Stock Exchange.

In 2001, a new expansion cycle for SIC begins, developing new activity areas and allowing the network, besides being the main channel, to have new theme channels: SIC Notícias (that took over for CNL, holding 60% at launch) and SIC Radical. Interest is also shown in the areas of multimedia, merchandising and technical services (GMTS). In the digital sphere, SIC Online emerges.

In 2003, the magazine area becomes Edimpresa, with Impresa holding 50% of its capital in a partnership with the Swiss group Edipresse, that holds the other 50%. In mid 2008, IMPRESA acquires the total shares of Edimpresa. Subsequently, the newspaper and magazine activities are all concentrated under the Impresa Publishing sub-holding.
This year, the highlight is the birth of a new theme channel: SIC Mulher, on International Women's Day, on March 8th. Both SIC Indoor and SIC Esperança are also launched.

At the end of 2005, IMPRESA acquires the minority position in SIC, elevating its participation to 100% of its capital.

In the 1st trimester, IMPRESA creates a new business area, called Impresa Digital, where a portfolio of shares in several companies is concentrated, with activities in internet and new technologies, which become base assets in the digital production and distribution strategy of contents, for multiple platforms.

At the end of 2008, with the financial crisis that crises in Portugal, the IMPRESA Group reformulates its strategy, concentrating only on its main activities, reducing its publications and company portfolio. With this measure, it is possible to cut operational costs by tens of millions of euros and, simultaneously, reduce its interest bearing liabilities.

At the beginning of 2009, SIC secures the totality of the capital of the company that held the SIC Notícias channel. SIC initiates the international expansion of its theme channels. On December 18th, SIC K is born, a channel dedicated to children.

In 2010, SIC takes to co-production of Portuguese novelas, in a partnership with SP Televisão and TV Globo. The first novela, “Laços de Sangue”, is a huge ratings success, allowing SIC to recover the leadership of the main commercial targets on prime time. This novela marks the beginning of SIC's success and growing investment in the area of Portuguese fiction.

In 2011, the novela “Laços de Sangue” is awarded an International Emmy, in the Novelas category, providing SIC an opening to international novela production markets, in the following year. During a restructuring of the Group, the digital area is reduced to InfoPortugal – Development and Production of Georeferenced Contents, to Olhares, that holds the largest Portuguese language photography portal, and to DGSM.

DGSM is sold to Nonius Software, in exchange for a 15,06% holding, that is dedicated to the supplying of HSIA and hospitality services for the hospitality industry. Nonius' position is, however, alienated in 2015.

SIC launches its fifth theme channel: SIC CARAS, on December 6th, that inherits the name and the characteristics of the CARAS magazine.

In 2014, as a part of its digital expansion, EXPRESSO launches “EXPRESSO Diário”, a daily newspaper only available online, for subscribers and buyers of the paper version. It quickly becomes a success and, in less than two years, EXPRESSO's number of digital customers exceeds the 17 thousand mark, representing roughly 20% of its total distribution.
At the end of 2014, SIC launches its first channel exclusively dedicated to Portuguese speaking African markets – DSTV Kids –, exclusively for the DSTV platform.

SIC is present in 14 countries, through 53 operators with seven channels, reaching more than six million viewers.
In 2015, the IMPRESA is the largest media Group in Portugal, with a revenue of 230 M€. The activity is divided in two business areas – Television and Publishing –, with assets that include the SIC television network, seven theme channels, the EXPRESSO newspaper, an extensive magazine portfolio, several properties on the internet and in applications, a new technologies company, and also holdings in publishing distributions.
Also included in its digital expansion, EXPRESSO launches “EXPRESSO Curto”, a daily newsletter, sent in the morning, with a brief summary of the news headlines that mark the country and the world.

The beginning of 2016 is marked by the new organization of the Group IMPRESA, leaded by the CEO Francisco Pedro Pinto Balsemão, better adapted to the challenges imposed to the media sector.
SIC's telenovelas, “Coração D’Ouro” and “Mar Salgado”, respectively win the Gold and Bronze medals, in the Telenovela category, at the New York Festival’s World’s Best TV & Films℠ award show, that takes place in Las Vegas. It is the first time that telenovelas produced in our country are finalists in this festival, where productions of around fifty countries are present.
The IMPRESA creates a new online platform that aggregates all the group's creative offers. The main goal of Impresa Media Criativa is to have a market integrated platform – B2B –, namely, current and potential advertisers and agencies.
On the day SIC commemorates its 24th anniversary, October 6th, it becomes the first national television network to make all its channels available in high definition (HD). SIC's channels are made available to all national operators in their HD versions.

On March 6th, SIC reinforces the sale of contents in the international market, launching a specific website to promote the sale of its contents. At http://contentdistribution.sic.pt/ it is possible to view SIC's whole catalogue, of its eight television channels, with the best contents for the international market.
Also in March, SIC reinforces its investment in Africa through the repositioning of SIC International, focusing on a new image and an offering that is better adapted to this continent. The channel presents a programming grid with new contents and reinforces the broadcasting of premium programs, like fiction and sports. The investment in SIC Internacional África is a crucial step in consolidating SIC as a benchmark channel in the Portuguese speaking markets, fundamental territories for IMPRESA's international expansion.
In May, Smack is born, a new, strictly digital IMPRESA platform and, at the same time, a “factory” of digital contents available to the whole Group.

The Group IMPRESA sells its – “Activa”, “Caras”, “Caras Decoração”, “Courrier”, “Exame”, “Exame Informática”, “Jornal de Letras”, “Telenovelas”, “TV Mais”, “Visão”, “Visão História” e “Visão Júnior” – publications to the Trust in News society. This alienation was part of the Strategic Plan for the 2017-2019 triennium, taking IMPRESA's activity repositioning into account.
